Artificial Intelligence and Private Sector Labor Market Transformations: Career transformation, opportunities and challenges
Main Article Content
Abstract
The current paper aims to identify the reality of labor market transformations in private sector institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia resulting from their reliance on artificial intelligence, by studying the professional transformations associated with replacing traditional jobs and changing the required skills, exploring the transformative opportunities it provides, and monitoring the transformative challenges it poses, leading to Providing recommendations to enhance the ability of individuals and organizations to adapt to these transformations.
The paper adopts a descriptive analytical approach to explore the role of artificial intelligence in these transformations. This approach answers exploratory questions related to the extent of its impact on professional transformation in terms of job nature and performance efficiency, whether it provides transformative opportunities in the labor market, and what are the most significant transformative challenges it poses to the private sector workforce. The study population was represented by a group of workers in the private sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, amounting to 24,000 individuals. The immediate sample size was 378 individuals. The questionnaire was distributed electronically, and 390 questionnaires were retrieved for analysis.
The results showed a high level of agreement among participants regarding the three dimensions of the study. She pointed out that artificial intelligence contributes to professional transformation, especially by improving efficiency and effectiveness, improving the quality of outputs, reducing the time required to perform tasks, and changing the skills required in the labor market. Continuous learning has been identified as particularly important for survival in the labor market. The results also showed high perceptions of transformative opportunities, especially the importance of creativity and critical thinking, creating new job opportunities that require advanced skills, and moving towards higher value-added activities. At the same time, the findings revealed several perceived challenges, most notably the gap between higher education outcomes and AI-related labor market requirements, risks to workers who rely on routine jobs, increased involuntary unemployment among low-skilled workers, and concerns about discrimination in AI-based employment.
The current paper concludes that survey participants view artificial intelligence as an important factor in reshaping professional roles and job requirements in the Saudi private sector. This is linked to opportunities to improve productivity, create new forms of work, challenges related to skills transformation and routine work, employment risks, and the compatibility of education with labor market requirements.
Based on these findings, the study recommends establishing ongoing training and rehabilitation programs for private sector employees, aligning higher education and vocational training programs with emerging labor market requirements, using artificial intelligence to enhance human productivity rather than relying primarily on employee replacement, developing career transition and redeployment programs for employees affected by technological transformation, and enhancing creativity and critical thinking capabilities. Establishing partnerships between educational institutions and the private sector, and developing regulatory and organizational mechanisms to ensure fairness, transparency, and human oversight in AI-powered employment.
